Why Do People Snore
Snoring is one of the most common health issues people face today. Snoring causes a lot of inconvenience to people and can be a cause to more stressful relationships. Approximately 45% of the people all across the globe snore at times and around 25% of the people are afflicted with regular snoring problem. Nowadays, the question ‘why do people snore and how can we stop it?’ bothers every person who suffers from excessive snoring or their partners who may be even more affected by the snoring.
When air passes through the tissues present inside the throat, tissues start vibrating when a person breathes. These vibrations result in the production of snoring sounds. Snoring may lead to social annoyance.
The various reasons responsible for why people snore include the following:
** Anatomy of mouth – The back of the throat consists of thick soft palate and enlarged tonsils. The presence of these structures at the back of the throat blocks the passage of air by narrowing the air passage. Similarly, the presence of an elongated triangular piece of tissue which hangs from the uvula may block the air passage.
** Weight – People who weigh more possess a thick mass of skin around their necks. The presence of a thick layer of skin around the neck may put more pressure on the back of the throat and thus result in snoring.
** Consumption of Alcohol – A person who drinks before going off to sleep may also snore a lot during his/her sleep because it affects the relaxation of their throat.
** Congestion in Nasal track – Allergies can be a common cause of congestion. Also at times the partition between the nostrils may be crooked and this might aggravate snoring.
** Sleep apnea is another problem that is almost always accompanied by snoring.
Various techniques are available to achieve a life with less snoring. People who suffer from snoring are initially advised to adopt a better lifestyle which involves losing weight, change sleeping postures, stop consuming alcohol etc. If no improvement is observed in the problem, then you should consult a doctor who may advise them to switch over to the use of various drugs and surgical methods depending on the extent of the snoring problem in the patients.
Various oral appliances have been developed which are capable of broadening the air passage by pulling the tongue and soft palate a little towards the upper side of the mouth. In case of traditional surgeries, the surgeon removes excess tissues from the back of the throat in order to broaden the air passage. Uvula is removed and the soft palate is cut short in a laser surgery.
